The head of armed gangs in Haiti, Jimmy Chérizier, known as ‘Barbecue’, declared this Tuesday that the Prime Minister, Ariel Henry, must resign or, otherwise, warned of an imminent “genocide” in the Caribbean country.

“If Ariel Henry does not resign, the country is heading directly towards genocide. If the international community continues to support Ariel Henry, we are heading towards a civil war that will lead to genocide,” the former police officer warned.

Carrying a rifle and a long-range weapon, ‘Barbecue’ stressed that the international community, particularly the United States, Canada and France, will be responsible for all the people murdered in Haiti, where violent days have recently been recorded with a dozen dead .

“We want Ariel Henry to listen to reason,” insisted the leader of the coalition of bands known as ‘Vivre ensemble’ (Live together).

He assured that he has no limits in his fight against the current Administration. “We fought against Ariel Henry to the last drop of our blood,” added Chérizier, who declared willing, even, to ally himself with the devil to achieve it.

Henry was first in Guyana last week, where he participated in the meeting of the Caribbean Community (Caricom) and then traveled to Kenya, where he discussed the sending of the multinational security support mission that that African country will lead and which was approved by the UN in October.

The escalation of violence in Haiti broke out on Thursday, after the Prime Minister of the Bahamas, Phillip Davis, said that, during the Caricom summit, Henry had committed to holding elections before August 31, 2025.

Since then, days of extreme violence have taken place and last Saturday the armed gangs entered the ‘La Capitale’ and ‘Croix des Bouquets’ prisons, the largest in the country, from which around 3,600 inmates escaped.

The UN Security Council scheduled an extraordinary closed-door session for this Wednesday to discuss the case of Haiti, where the violence of recent days has caused the displacement of 15,000 people.
