Imran Khan loses power as PML-N and PPP strike a deal in Pakistan

Pakistan’s political landscape has changed dramatically after two rival parties, PML-N and PPP, agreed to form a government and elect a prime minister, leaving Imran Khan and his PTI party in the opposition.

A government formation agreement has been reached between Pakistan’s PML-N and PPP parties, led by Nawaz Sharif and Bilawal Bhutto respectively.

The PPP pledged to support the PML-N in choosing a prime minister, following the recent election.

The two parties had earlier joined forces to remove Imran Khan from power in 2022.

However, in this election, the most seats were won by independent candidates who were supported by Imran Khan’s PTI party.

The PTI secured 93 out of 266 directly elected seats, creating confusion among voters about the next government.

The PML-N came second with 75 seats, and the PPP was third with 54 seats.

More seats will be given to parties from the 70 reserved for women and non-Muslims. These seats are not accessible to independent candidates.

PML-N leader Nawaz Sharif intends to appoint his brother Shehbaz as prime minister, according to PML-N official Marriyum Aurangzeb. Both brothers have been prime ministers before.

Mr Bhutto stated that his party would assist the PML-N in electing a prime minister, but he also said that his party would not join the cabinet.

Imran Khan and his party have maintained that the elections were unfair and they will contest the results.
