Taliban regime confirms imprisonment of two Americans

The spokesperson of the regime stated that discussions are ongoing regarding this case but did not reveal the names of the prisoners.

Two US citizens are currently detained in Afghanistan in a prison controlled by the Taliban government for violating the rules of the Afghan fundamentalists, confirmed the chief spokesperson of the de facto regime this Sunday.

“It is not clear for what purpose the two Americans came to Afghanistan, but whatever purpose they come for, they have to obey the law of Afghanistan,” said the chief spokesperson of the Taliban government, Zabiullah Mujahid, in a video message broadcasted by TOLO News channel.

The spokesperson stated that discussions are ongoing regarding this case but did not reveal the names of the prisoners.

According to Mujahid, the Americans were detained for “violating the law in Afghanistan.”

In addition to the Americans, an unknown number of foreigners are detained in the country for violating the rules of the Islamist regime, the spokesperson asserted.

“Anyone who travels to Afghanistan must obey the laws of the country and, if the law is violated, they will definitely face legal action,” he added.

Although there are no official details about the identity or alleged infractions of the detainees, relatives and media have reported for over a year the arrest of the American Ryan Corbett in August 2022 and have been calling for his release since then.

Corbett lived in Afghanistan for over a decade, alongside his wife and children, leading his own consulting firm and subcontracting for various NGOs, until the withdrawal of international troops and the fall of Kabul into the hands of the Taliban in August 2021.

Corbett returned on his own in January 2022 to renew his business visa and pay his workers, according to his family.

The United States, like most states and international organizations, does not recognize the Taliban government or have diplomatic representation in the country since the withdrawal of its troops.

The Afghan Taliban fundamentalist movement has denounced on Saturday that United States drones are violating Afghanistan’s airspace and has demanded that Washington take their warnings seriously.

“These drones undoubtedly belong to the United States and are crossing the airspace of other countries towards Afghanistan,” declared Taliban Deputy Information Minister Zabiullah Mujahid in remarks reported by Tolo News channel.
